During the golden ages, the ancient Nadars governed their villages abiding by the principles of jurisprudence following the six - thousand Pandiyars. The Nayakka Kings, who came to resolve the issues between the Nadars, invaded the lands of Nadars. Owing to the change of government and the ruthless exploitation of the new administrators “Palayapattukaras”, many of the Nadars who lost their lands had to relocate to the villages of Kongu Nadu, such as Coimbatore and Salem and renamed themselves to be Chettys and Gounders.
Most of the Nadars who were established from the seashores of Tirunelveli District, Nanguneri Taluk up to the seashores of Tanjore District, converted themselves to Islam, the religion of brotherhood, equality and courage. There are many factual evidences for this. The other Nadars who were indisposed of this relocation and religious conversion moved to the places like Tiruchendur, Srivaikundam Taluks, where people of the same social class dwelt.
Once the governance and religious spread of Islam established over the southern regions, most Nadars started to move towards north once again. Thus, moving towards north from Tiruchendur taluk, Nadars stayed at several places and finally settled at Virudhupatti ( Virudhunagar ). One among such Nadars was our ancestor. Our ancestral temple “Karkozhai Ayyanar” still exists at Theri village, near Nasareth at Tiruchendur Taluk.
